XJTU PRESIDENT'S WELCOME SPEECH FOR THE NEW SUTDENTS

Dear Students and Teachers

Good Morning Everyone!
Today we welcome the new undergraduate class of 2006. On behalf of the entire university, I commend you on your successful admission to Xian Jiaotong University and completion of the language training.

This past April, we just celebrated our 110th Anniversary of the founding of Jiaotong University and the 50th Anniversary of the relocation to Xian. Ever since it’s founding, Xian Jiaotong University has been among the top ranking universities in the country. We have always nurtured our students to be passionate about science, innovative and respectful of society and the country. You, as the future of our university, all have the responsibility to advance scientific knowledge for the country and even the world. Throughout the years, we have been successful in education, research, and community service. As we progress in the last century, we declined our students to be…JingQinQiuXue, DunDuoLiZhi, GuoYiLiXing, ZhongShuRenShi. ?This leads to our university highs standards, our stable fundamentals, strict requirements, practical education. Our university promotes tradition morals such as to love your school and country, peruse the truth, to be ambitiously studious, and endure hard work. Our university cultural and studious produces many famous, is an ideal foundation for today’s upcoming intellectuals. This is why many students want to attend our prestigious school.
Today Xian Jiaotong University is one of the country’s nine most developed universities. Nevertheless our university is still progressing to be recognized as a world renowned research and technological institute of education. Not only should you be proud to attend Xian Jiaotong University but you should also feel responsibility to have started the next step of your career with us.
This year we’ve accepted 3,275 students as the first class of our new Peng Kang institute. Peng Kang is named after a famous Chinese educator and politician who was also the president of Jiaotong University for 16 years. By adopting this traditional method of school maintenance, it will increase and strengthen the quality of students and promote intercollegial communication, a strong unification spirit, and form good habits in everyday life.
At the start of the new semester, I, as an elder and a teacher offer some advice:

1. Be ambitious and enthusiastic about learning. During the first 3 weeks, it is very important to maintain one’s enthusiasm in learning. These 3 weeks will be important in determining your academic foundation. If you’re successful in completing your first year, you will have the confidence to finish your college career. If you put all of your efforts into your studies, have a deep grasp of the first 3 weeks of college life, diligently pursue your first year’s basic courses, then you will achieve a fruitful future.
2. Build confidence, maintain a positive morale, and find ways to overcome difficulties. In the past whether you’ve experienced the sweet taste of success or the ugly face of failure, it is forever embedded in your memory. On the road to success, you will encounter many obstacles along the way. Even the best high school students will have difficulties in college. These difficulties are formed by an unstable foundation of knowledge or poor study habits; however, no matter what, you can never give up. Once there was an undergraduate from Sichuan with high honors in high school, but was not use to the way of college education. He could not comprehend the material in his Advanced Mathematics and Physics courses, and did not ask others for help. At the end of the semester, he failed 4 courses. This upset him greatly. At the end with the help of teachers and students, he regained his enthusiasm for knowledge and was awarded the highest recognition at a university competition. Now he is enrolled in the PhD program in Physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Overcome your problems by finding the solutions in the worst case scenarios.
3. In this new era of technologies, there are many distractions on and off campus. The campus environment has changed into a mixture of new trends and progressive thoughts. Learning to avoid these distractions will be a new challenge in life. Every year there are a few students who will disobey school rules, cheat on exams, exhibit bad behavior, and be addicted to the internet. These all lead to failure in many courses, which results in suspension or even worse, expulsion from the school. They will be regretful and shamed of their actions because it will end their life long dreams. The school and their parents will also be remorseful for them. These punished students were once very excellent students, but small mistakes will escalate into bigger issues which can forever change their lives. As the president of the school, I feel responsible for every student’s healthy growth and every teacher should also feel responsible for the education and growth of each student. However, students cannot fully depend on their instructors; they must persevere and study on their own. Even at the request of the expelled students and their parents, we cannot change school regulations and take back these students. As the president of this school, I feel extreme sympathy for these students.

If you can grasp this great opportunity, you can create a bountiful career. If you give up, you will lose your bright future. To avoid loosing this opportunity, you must have a good prospective on life, avoid distractions, and make your academics your top priority. If you do so, you will have a bright future. Lastly, I offer a quote from the former president of this school Tang Wen Zhi to help encourage each other. “If you want to be a scholar, be the best; if your want a successful career, you must be the best; and if you are a talented person, then you must be the most talented. To be the best at all 3, you must exhibit excellent morale conduct.”
Students, set high goals for your life, grasp your lifetime opportunities, the future belongs to you. Let’s turn a new page in your life and spend the most memorable years together. Thank you everyone!

亲爱的各位同学、各位老师：
    大家早上好！
    今天我们在这里举行2006级本科生开学典礼，我谨代表学校向各位以优异的成绩考入西安交通大学，并圆满完成军训表示衷心的祝贺。
     同学们踏入大学，迎接你们的第一课是军训。经过军训的洗礼，同学们振奋了精神，锻炼了体魄，为你们的校园生活增添了青春的阳光和刚健的色彩。充满着汗水和欢乐的军训一定会留在同学们的记忆中。
     今年4月我们刚刚度过西安交通大学建校110周年暨交通大学迁校50周年的华诞。回顾风雨百年，西安交通大学作为中国最优秀的大学之一，始终坚持致力于培养崇尚科学、追求创新、富有社会责任感的国家栋梁人才，并以保存、创造、应用及传播知识，为中国乃至世界的科技进步和社会发展做出贡献为使命，在人才培养、科学研究和社会服务方面创造了不凡的成就。在百余年的办学历程中，西安交通大学以“精勤求学，敦笃励志，果毅力行，忠恕任事”为训导，形成了“起点高、基础厚、要求严、重实践”的办学特色和“爱国爱校、追求真理、勤奋踏实、艰苦朴素”的优良传统。深厚的大学精神和文化，良好的学风和育人环境，使这所百年老校成为大家名流荟萃，莘莘学子神往，栋梁之材辈出，享誉神州内外的知名学府。
    今天西安交通大学作为国家重点建设的九所中国一流大学之一，正在向着世界知名高水平研究型大学迈进。各位同学能在这样一所学府深造学习，开始人生新的起点，既是一种荣幸和自豪，更是一种责任和使命。
    今年入学的新生中有3275名同学成为彭康书院第一期学生。彭康书院是以我国著名的教育家、政治家，并担任交通大学校长长达16年之久的彭康校长命名的。采用书院式管理模式是我校加强和改善学生全面素质培养的重大举措，它有利于增进不同学院学生之间的交流、集体合作精神的培养和良好生活习惯的养成。
    在新学期开学之际，我作为一位师长向各位同学提几点希望：

   一、以饱满的学习热情把握好大学开始的前三周
    相当多的统计数据告诉我们，迈入大学后的前三周的学习态度和行为养成非常重要，往往这三周的学习和生活对大学生形成大学期间正确的学习态度和良好的生活习惯有着很大关系。另外，如果在一年级的课程学习中不出现挂科，多数同学都充满着自信去完成整个大学学业。因此，以饱满的学习热情投入到大学的学习中，把握好自己开始大学的前三周，认真学好第一年的基础课程，希望的种子就会结出丰硕的果实。

   二、树立信心，保持良好心态，学会找到战胜困难的方法
    在过去的学习生活中，无论你是否拥有过成功的欢乐，失败的遗憾，这都成为永远的记忆。大学之路不会是一帆风顺，也会有让你烦恼和沮丧的时候，既使是最优秀的高中生来到大学，在学习中也会有遇到困难的时候。这些困难往往是基础知识不扎实所造成，或学习态度不端正所致。但是，不管怎样，同学们都不能被任何困难所打倒。
    理学院曾经有一位来自四川的本科生，中学时成绩名列前茅，由于不适应大学的教学方式，大一的第一学期高等数学和物理等课程听不懂，但又没有利用课外时间请教辅导老师和同学，导致期末四门功课不及格，心灰意冷。后来，在老师和同学的帮助下，这位同学重新找回了学习的信心，并参加了“挑战杯”全国大学生课外活动学术科技作品竞赛，获得了大赛特等奖。现在这位同学已在美国伊利诺伊斯大学攻读物理学博士学位。因此，面对挫折和困难，关键是树立信心，战胜自我，学会找到战胜困难的方法。

    三、抵制各种诱惑，防止小错改变一生
    信息社会的发展，校园生活的丰富，使得现代大学的校园已不是一个安静的港湾，它成为社会发展中各种思潮、风气和流行时尚的交汇点。抵制来自各方面的诱惑是现代大学生面临的新的人生挑战。在各种诱惑的影响下，学校每年都有个别学生因违反学校的纪律，考试作弊、行为不端或沉迷上网导致多门课程不及格等，而被令其退学，甚至开除。这些学生为不得不离开实现自己梦想的地方而追悔莫及和内疚，家长和学校也深感痛心。受到处分的这些同学在入学时也是优秀的，往往是一些小错铸成大错或一念之差而改变了他们的一生。
    作为校长理应为每一位学生的健康成长而鞠躬尽瘁，每一位教师都应将教书育人作为其天职和必尽的责任。但是，学习的过程和同学们的成长不仅仅依赖于你们的老师、辅导员的教育培养和指导，更重要的是大学生自身的努力和修养。面对这些不得不中断大学学习的同学和他们家长的请求，我们无法改变校规和对大学生行为准则的规范。看到这些学生的离校，作为校长我内心有着极大的遗憾。
    把握好大学学习的机遇，能为青年人带来幸运，而放纵自己就会给人生带来不幸。避免这种不幸，就要树立正确的人生观，抵制各种诱惑，把当前的学习作为生活中的第一内容，同学们一定会迎来灿烂的明天。
    最后让我引用唐文治老校长的一段话与同学们共勉：“须知吾人欲成学问，当为第一等学问；欲成事业，当为第一等事业；欲成人才，当为第一等人才。而欲成第一等学问、事业、人才，必先砥砺第一等品行。”
    同学们，扬起理想的风帆，把握人生的机遇，交大的未来属于你们，让我们一起翻开生活的新篇章，在未来的岁月里伴随同学们共同度过你们一生最值得怀念的日子。
