Name:Li Annie
Batch:2006
The Chinese-American lady chosen as the student of the fortnight you see in the picture is the lightning rod for the batch 2006 of XJTU. She is a time bomb of compassion and beauty. We reckon, one day, her intelligence will be sent as an electrifying buzz across the world.
1) How do you feel to be chosen as the student of the fortnight?
Surprised and honored.
2)What is life as a medical student?
Life as a medical student is...a long process of time management. You have to learn to manage your time well between studying and also having fun. It's not always about being cooped up in the library, you have to find ways to relax and de-stress.
3) Who is your role model and why?
There are a lot of people in my life whom I look up to. First and foremost would be my parents, because they've sacrificed so much to create a better future for me. Another would be my long-time childhood friend Kristen Jadelrab, who has always made me believe in myself and pushed me to better myself.
4) What is the reason behind choosing this field as your career?
I've always had an interest in the medical field. I guess you could say it
runs in my family, but ultimately, I wanted this for myself. I've always
wanted to try and "save the world" and I guess this is my way of giving back
to the world. Plus, I've always wanted to work with Medicins Sans Frontiers
(Doctors Without Borders).
5) Before coming here what was your expectation and after being here what is your observation?
To be honest, I didn't really have that many expectations before coming here. Now that I'm here, I have to say that I am surprised at how much students study here. I guess that's one thing that I did not expect.
6)Missing home!
Surprisingly, not so much. Though I do miss family and friends....and the food! I never knew I ate that much American food until I came here and there was none. KFC and Mickey D's do not count as American food! hahaha!
7)How do you intend to describe your university and China?
Well, let's see...I think studying at this university gives me great insight into the Chinese culture and way of life. I left China at a very young age; therefore, I haven't had much contact with the Chinese culture and customs. Coming back to China for medical school has also made me appreciate my culture and heritage.
8)What role can you play to improve the health of people and what makes
you think so?
I believe in a strong and close doctor/patient relationship. Many of the doctors in the states only examine a patient for 2 or 3 minutes and also charge them an exuberant amounts of money. Spending minimal time with patients could lead to misdiagnosis and even mistreatment. I believe doctors should take time, no matter how precious it is, and get to know their patients.
9) What is success to you?
To me, success isn't measured in fortune and fame. Success is happiness, knowing that YOU have done something worthwhile in your lifetime and having no regrets. Knowing that because you lived, the world is a better place. Do something meaningful with your life. It's precious, so don't waste it.
10) Any final words ?
Study hard, party harder.
